Slight swelling is expected during pregnancy; however, if you experience sudden swelling in your hands and your face, it could be a sign of preeclampsia. It is important to contact your health care provider about any sudden swelling.

Preeclampsia is a condition of high blood pressure during pregnancy. Your blood pressure goes up, you retain water, and protein is found in your urine. It is also called toxemia or pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH). The exact cause of preeclampsia is unknown.

Who is at risk for preeclampsia?

The following may increase the risk of developing preeclampsia:

A first-time mom

Women whose sisters and mothers had preeclampsia

Women carrying multiple babies; teenage mothers; and women older than age 40

Women who had high blood pressure or kidney disease prior to pregnancy

What are the symptoms of preeclampsia?

Mild preeclampsia: high blood pressure, water retention, and protein in the urine.

Severe preeclampsia: headaches, blurred vision, inability to tolerate bright light, fatigue, nausea/vomiting, urinating small amounts, pain in the upper right abdomen, shortness of breath, and tendency to bruise easily. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience blurred vision, severe headaches, abdominal pain, and/or urinating very infrequently .

How do I know if I have preeclampsia?

At each prenatal checkup your healthcare provider will check your blood pressure, urine levels, and may order blood tests which may show if you have preeclampsia.

Your physician may also perform other tests that include: checking kidney and blood-clotting functions; ultrasound scan to check your baby's growth; and Doppler scan to measure the efficiency of blood flow to the placenta.

How is preeclampsia treated?

Treatment depends on how close you are to your due date. If you are close to your due date, and the baby is developed enough, your health care provider will probably want to deliver your baby as soon as possible.

If you have mild preeclampsia and your baby has not reached full development, your doctor will probably recommend you do the following:

Rest, lying on your left side to take the weight of the baby off your major blood vessels.

Increase prenatal checkups.

Consume less salt.

Drink 8 glasses of water a day.

If you have severe preeclampsia, your doctor may try to treat you with blood pressure medication until you are far enough along to deliver safely.

How does preeclampsia affect my baby?

Preeclampsia can prevent the placenta from getting enough blood. If the placenta doesn't get enough blood, your baby gets less oxygen and food. This can result in low birth weight.

Most women still can deliver a healthy baby if preeclampsia is detected early and treated with regular prenatal care.

How can I prevent preeclampsia:

Currently, there is no sure way to prevent preeclampsia. Some contributing factors to high blood pressure can be controlled and some can't. Follow your doctor's instruction about diet and exercise.

Use little or no added salt in your meals.

Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day.

Don't eat a lot of fried foods and junk food.

Get enough rest

Exercise regularly

Elevate your feet several times during the day.

Avoid drinking alcohol.

Avoid beverages containing caffeine.

Your doctor may suggest you take prescribed medicine and additional supplements.*PICS* swelling in lips, fingers, eye lids?
Have you been checked for preeclampsia? That is a sign you may have high blood pressure. Especially if your swelling like that. Drink lots of water also. It may seem pointless if your swelling but it will help keep some of the swelling down. Try to schedule a drs appt about this and make sure its the earliest time so that when you get up you are still swollen and they can see that you are swelling.
Hey, It looks like some sort of allergic reaction. Pregnancy can do weird things to you. With my last pregnancy i was fine pre-pregnancy but after the first trimester when i would eat watermelon my tongue would swell, and gets white bumps and it waould shake like i had a nervous condition. It would go away hours later.
could be a sign of gestational diabetes..id go back or call your ob
this is not normal. u should contact your doctor.
You need to go back to the doctor. See another doctor not the same one because it looks like you are having an allergic reaction to something.
Take the pictures with you when you go to show the doctor.
That isn't good. You shouldn't be retaining water there. I would call your doctor and go to the ER to be safe. As this is a symptoms of Preeclampsia!!
show the doctor the picture and explain to him what has been happening.
OMG...Not trying to scare you but you really should make an appointment with your OB/GYN as soon as possible.

Ive never heard of this and am on my second child.
Your Gorgeous!

Yea I would definitely call your OBGYN as soon as possible. I have never seen anything like this or have heard of it. Although I just read in my book that it is normal in hands due to having extra bodily fluids from being pregnant, but nothing about the lips. I would get checked out ASAP!
This is not normal. Your thyroid could be acting up. Or you are having an allergic reaction to something. You need to call your DR and be seen right away.

ETA:

You need to bring these pictures in with you then. I'm telling you, I've been pregnant 3 times, I've known LOTS of pregnant women, this is NOT normal.

In fact my Aunt had swelling and was told it was normal, my mother made her go to her DR and they found out her thyroid was out of whack and she was put on bed rest.

Yes, you can swell when you are pregnant, but not like that, and not at 8 - 10 weeks.
Aw, you're so cute.

Yes, your lip looks very swollen. Definitely call your doctor.

Just read your question again. Did you see your OB or just some random urgent care doctor? See your OB!!!
